Happy New Year!

Hello students! As some of you may know, I am in Hong Kong right now. Wednesday and Thursday will end and begin a new year! Happy New Year!

I want to let you know that my phone still works while I am in Hong Kong, but it will cost over 2RMB to receive a text message from China. So, PLEASE DO NOT SEND A SMS FOR THE NEW YEAR! It will be very costly to me. If you want to wish me a happy new year, please do so by email. It's still free!

I will return on Sunday, so if you would like to ask questions or visit, let me know. You are always welcome to eat with me or spend time talking.

Good luck on your final exams and I hope to see you soon.

Assignment for 12/8, 12/11, and 12/12 and Journal Requirements

Hello students!

This week I will be giving you advice based on what I saw in your speeches. You need to prepare by reading the following articles and preparing your journal.

Reading:
Framing a Thesis Statement:
http://writing.colostate.edu/guides/speaking/infomod/pop5b.cfm - also click on the two links to read how to develop a thesis statement for the audience.

The Five-Step Method for Improving Delivery:
http://writing.colostate.edu/guides/speaking/infomod/com2g1.cfm

These resources are from Colorado State University in the USA.

Journal Requirements:
According to the syllabus, you are required to write a journal. This journal should have one entry for every month of the semester, excluding December, and after your informative speech. This means you should have four (4) journal entries.

Each journal entry should have the following information:

1. A review of your personal communication skills. This should be your first journal entry.
2. How what you have learned has helped you with your communication skills. This should include some of the information in class, but should not be limited to the class. (For example, "I learned that there are three types of communication: body language, voice tonality and words," is NOT a good sentence. A good sentence would be, "In my life I have thought communication was only words. Now I know that body language is the most important part of communication.") This should be the second and third journal entry.
3. For the journal entry for the speech, write how you prepared the speech and what you would do differently if you were do do this again. Also write about your presentation and what you think you should improve in giving the presentation.
4. DO NOT write your speech in your journal. If you write your speech in your journal I will give you and automatic score of 0.

The final exam is coming soon. We will discuss what to prepare in class.

Presentations

Hello students!

For the next three weeks you will be giving your informative speeches. Please make sure you prepare well. Also, remember to dress nice for the week you present.

Also, remember you are allowed one unexcused absence. If you have not used it, one of the next three weeks would be a good time to do it (remember, you cannot use it on the week you present.

Also, if you have not given me your topic, you must do so this week.

Mid-Term Exam Instructions

Hello students! This week you will take your mid-term exam. Here are the instructions so you will know what to do and what to expect.

Before you arrive, please review the study guide and any notes you have taken in class. Study with friends. Good preparation will determine if the test is extremely hard or easy. Do not wait until the night before the test to begin preparation. It will cause you to have a restless night and you will come to the test tired.
Be relaxed! Remember what we discussed about fear. Let it help you.
Eat breakfast or lunch, but not too much. Bring a bottle of water. Use the restroom before you come.
Arrive in the room a few minutes early to get one last look at your notes.
Do not bring many books to the test unless you do not have time to return to your dorm room.

When you arrive, look over your notes one last time. Do not try to memorize. It is too late. Smile!

When I arrive in the class, be prepared to move to a different room. The class rooms are too small for an exam, so we will go to a different and larger room.

Once we move, all bags should be placed in the front of the classroom. This includes eyeglass cases, pencil cases, mobile phones and dictionaries. All that will be allowed at your seat are two pencils or pens, a bottle with no label with something to drink, and some type of eraser (tape or liquid paper).

Once you receive your test, there will be absolutely no talking allowed. If you have a question about the test, you may raise your hand and I will come to you. Please do not leave your seat. If I catch you communicating with another student I will assume you are cheating and both of you will receive a score of 0 on your test. This includes talking and looking at their paper. If you are caught with paper at your desk I will take your test and you will receive a score of 0.

When you finish the test, congratulations! You have earned a break! There will be no assignment for after the test and you are free to leave. Be sure to review all 6 pages of the test to make sure you have answered all of the questions.

What type of questions are on the test?

The test will consist of the following types of questions:
1. Listing - short answers. (25%)
2. Multiple choice - write the letter of the best choice (10%)
3. True - False - Write YES or NO next to the sentence. (10%)
4. Discussion - Write a paragraph on a given question. (40%)
5. Draw - Draw a diagram (10%)
6. Fill in the blank - Fill in the missing parts of an example outline. (5%)

There will be one extra credit question worth a maximum of 10% of the grade.

What questions will be on the test?

Good try, but I'm not going to tell you that. You have to prepare on your own!

I'm scared! What should I do?

Prepare! It is the best way to prevent being nervous or scared.

I thought this was an oral English class. Why are we taking a written exam?

Although this class is an oral English class the exam is about spoken English, not written English. I will not grade your grammar or spelling. However, please write neatly and with the best grammar you can.

Any questions? Feel free to send an email.
